AREAS, ACREAGES, AND ACCOMMODATIONS

FOREWORD

This tabulation lists the State parks and related types
of recreation areas throughout the United States, together with the
acreages and ace ommodat ions of each, as of December 31> 195>0. This
supersedes the tabulation entitled, State Parks and Related Recrea-
tional Areas, Acreages and Accommodations as of June 30, 19^6 .

The data contained in this tabulation were obtained from
a questionnaire survey conducted by the National Park Service. A
total of 9h State park agencies is included in this tabulation, 86
of which submitted reports for this survey. Latest information
available to the Service was used for the eight agencies which did
not submit reports.

In addition to the tabulation of areas, acreages and ac-
commodations, an "Analysis of Data," a "Classification of Areas,"
and a "Summary of Totals by States" are also included to help in
interpreting these data.

CLASSIFICATION OF AREAS

The areas listed in this tabulation, which were reported by
the State park and State historical agericies under 61 different cate-
gories, have been grouped under three headings— State parks, State
historic sites, and State parkways. The \\% State waysides adminis-
tered by State park agencies have been placed under State parks, but
waysides administered by highway departments and other agencies have
been omitted from this tabulation. State forests and State wildlife
areas have also been omitted since these areas are not administered
primarily for recreation use .

The following classification of areas indicates which cate-
gories have been placed under each of the three headings:

ANALYSIS OF DATA

This analysis includes a State -by-State comparison of the
data presented in this tabulation and a comparison of these data with
those reported in State Parks and Related Recreation Areas, Acreage
and Accommodations as of June 30, 19U6 .

The largest State park system in the United States, from
the standpoint of land administered for park purposes, is in New York,
with a total acreage of 2,Ul9,6lU. California is next with 58l,82U
acres, followed by Maine with 160,199 acres, Michigan with 150,367
acres, and Pennsylvania with 106,005 acres.

The 10 largest State parks in the country are as follows:
(l) Adirondack Park, New York, 2,017,016 acres; (2) Anza Desert State
Park, California, 299,157 acres; (3) Catskill Park, New York, 232,1*23
acres; (U) Borrego State Park, California, 161,980 acres; (5) Baxter
State Park,Maine, lUl,712 acres; (6) Custer State Park, South Dakota,
68,97h acres; (7) Allegany State Park, New York, 57,962 acres; (8)
Palisades Interstate Park, New York and New Jersey, U7,602 acres; (9)
Porcupine Mountains State Park, Michigan, U6,991 acres; and (10)
Itasca State Park, Minnesota, 31,976 acres.

The States which have the largest acreage in their State
park systems, however, do not necessarily have the greatest number of
areas. Oregon, with only £7,882 acres in its park system, leads the
country in number of areas administered with Lu5. Next in order is
New York with 126, Ohio with 111, California with 107, and Iowa with
96. If State historic sites are considered separately, Ohio has the
greatest number with 50, followed by North Dakota with 37, N"ew York
with 29, Illinois with 2U, and California with 20. With reference to
State parkways, New York has 19; Rhode Island, four; Illinois, two;
and Iowa, one.

Overnight accommodations in this survey have been subdivid-
ed into four categories: hotels and lodges, cabins, organized or
group camps, and tent and trailer campsites. The total overnight
capacity, which is the total of these four categories, is also in-
cluded in this tabulation. New York is again in the lead with a
total overnight capacity of 33,538. Michigan is second with 22,081,
followed by California with 13,302, Kansas with 7,680, Pennsylvania
with 7,573, Missouri with 5,750, Indiana with 5>,60lj, Connecticut with
5,396, Illinois with U,90U, and South Dakota with U,282.

Hotels and lodges are not numerous in State parks, although
several States have recently started programs of constructing hotels
and cabins in their park systems. Indiana is the leader in this cate-
gory with 10 hotels, followed by Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee
with five each, and South Dakota with four. The hotel capacities in
various States present a different order. Indiana is still first with
a 1,288 capacity, but South Dakota is second with 35>0, Kentucky is
next with 333, followed by New lork with 231, and Arkansas with 206.

Vacation cabins in State parks are quite common in some
States but are non-existent in others, The Southern States are par-
ticularly strong in this category. New York has the most cabins with
6?!?, followed by Virginia with 162, Kentucky with li;8, Oklahoma with
litO, and Idaho with 13h. From the standpoint of capacity, the order
for the first five States is New lork, 3,667; Idaho, 670; Kentucky,
61±2; Pennsylvania, 630; and Oklahoma, 626.

The State park system of New York is outstanding as far as
the provision of organized camp facilities for group use is concerned.
There are a total of 78 organized camps, 66 of which are in Palisades
Interstate Park. The capacity of these camps is 10,0ltl4« The State
with the second largest number of organized camps is Pennsylvania
with 20, followed by California with 19, Michigan with 18, and Mis-
souri with 16. Pennsylvania also has the second largest capacity with
2,366, followed by Missouri with 2,280, California with 1,930 and
Illinois with 1,£>0.

Tent and trailer camping is most popular in the North and
West, but some southern States are beginning to provide facilities
for this activity. The campsite, which usually consists of a space
for a tent or trailer, a space for a car, and frequently such facili-
ties as fireplaces, tables and tent platforms, is the unit used in
this survey. The leader in this category is Michigan with £,217 camp-
sites, New York is next with U,899, followed by California with 2,765,
Kansas with 1,920 and Connecticut with 1,3^9. Since a capacity of
four persons per campsite has been used in this tabulation, the order
for campsite capacity for the first five States remains the same .

A review of the data reported for eating accommodations
shows that some of the same States are leaders here also, but a few
newcomers are included. Mississippi, for instance, ties New York for
the lead in restaurants with 12. Indiana follows with 11, Missouri
with 10 and Kentucky with eight. With reference to refreshment
stands, New York is again the leader with 83, followed by Michigan
with U2, Illinois with U0, Kentucky with 3U and Texas with 32.

Considerable progress has been made since 19U6 in land
acquisition and in the development of overnight accommodations. There
have been increases in every category in this tabulation, most of
which exceed 10 percent. The total acreage of State parks, State

historic sites, and State parkways increased 0.82 percent, or less
than one percent. This resulted from an increase of 0.71 percent for
State parks, 11 percent for State historic sites, and 16 percent for
State parkways. When the number of areas are considered, State parks
show an increase of 11 percent, State historic sites increased lii
percent and State parkways increased 13 percent. The increase for
the total of all areas is 11 percent.

The overnight accommodations reported in the i°U6 survey
are not completely comparable to this tabulation in that the capaci-
ties for hotels and lodges, cabins, and organized or group camps were
reported but the number of these accommodations were not. Also the
number of tent and trailer campsites were reported, but not the ca-
pacity. A study of the data which are comparable shows the following
increases: capacity of hotels and lodges, lij. percent; capacity of
cabins, 16 percent; capacity of organized or group camps, £9 percent;
number of tent and trailer campsites, nine percent; and number of
restaurants, 21 percent.
